A Joy-Filled Mommy and Me Session in Simi Valley | Runkle Canyon Park Family Photographer
There are some sessions that settle deep into your heart—sessions where everything aligns so beautifully that you walk away knowing you just captured something incredibly special. This mommy and me session in Simi Valley was exactly that. Without question, it has become one of my all-time favorite shoots. Not because the photos turned out beautiful—although they absolutely did—but because of the story, the heart, and the unmistakable joy woven through every moment we spent together at Runkle Canyon Park.
This session was with Allie, a new friend I met not long ago at life group. For those who might not be familiar with the term, life group is a small gathering of believers who meet consistently to study God’s Word, pray together, and walk through life side by side. When I met Allie there for the first time, I immediately noticed her warmth, her authenticity, and the gentle strength that seemed to rest on her shoulders. So when she asked if I could photograph her and her sweet little boy, I couldn’t have been more honored.
The Beauty of a Mother’s Presence
From the moment our session began, I knew we were about to create magic. Some sessions take a little warming up—kids need time, moms need reassurance, and the camera sometimes feels like a stranger. But not this one. Allie stepped in front of the lens like she was stepping into her most natural space. She wasn’t trying to pose. She wasn’t trying to be perfect. She was simply present—with an openness and peace that made every frame glow.
And then there was her son—an absolute little ham. The kind of child who lights up the moment the shutter clicks. He giggled, explored, snuggled into his mama, and soaked up every second of being her whole world. Their connection was effortless, affectionate, and full of the kind of joy you can’t pose—you just have to be ready to capture it when it spills out.
I’ve photographed many mothers and children over the years, but this session reminded me why mommy and me photography holds such a special place in my heart. There is something sacred about documenting the tenderness of motherhood, especially in a season when life isn’t perfectly put together or tied up in a bow. That realness—that honesty—is where the beauty lives.
A Biblical Reminder That Stayed with Me All Day
There was something else stirring in my heart during this session—something unexpected but deeply meaningful. Just earlier that week, I had finished a study on Joseph in the Bible. If you’re familiar with Joseph’s story, you know it’s filled with betrayal, hardship, waiting, resilience, redemption, and unshakable faith.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers. He was taken to a foreign land, falsely accused, and thrown into prison. Yet through all of it, Joseph remained faithful. His integrity, humility, and trust in God never wavered. And even in the darkest places, God’s favor rested on him so visibly that others couldn’t help but notice.
In Genesis 39:22, it says:
“The warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.”
Even in prison, Joseph’s character set him apart. God’s presence and favor were unmistakable.
As I photographed Allie, that study kept coming to mind—over and over. Not because her circumstances mirror Joseph’s, but because the evidence of God’s favor was just as visible on her. She is walking through some difficult personal battles right now. Hard things. Heavy things. Yet the joy she carries is radiant—so clearly not something the world can give or take away. It’s the kind of joy that comes only from the Lord.
Watching her delight in her son, watching her laugh so freely, watching her hold him close and soak in every moment—it was a picture of faith in action. A picture of God’s sustaining grace. A picture of a mother who is choosing joy, choosing trust, choosing love, even when life is not simple or easy.
I left the session feeling inspired, humbled, and grateful. God has a way of placing certain people in our lives at the exact moment we need them, and I know meeting Allie was one of those moments for me.
Why Runkle Canyon Park Was the Perfect Location
If you’re local to the area and looking for a spot for your Simi Valley mommy and me session, Runkle Canyon Park is an absolute gem. The light there is dreamy—soft, golden, and warm, especially in the late afternoon. The open fields, rolling hills, and natural textures create a perfect backdrop without distracting from the connection between parent and child.
During our session, the wind danced gently through the grasses, the hills glowed in the sunset, and the whole scene felt like it wrapped this little family in a warm, peaceful embrace. It’s one of my favorite locations for family photography for exactly this reason—it allows the story to unfold naturally.
Capturing Motherhood in Its Purest Form
When people ask what makes a mommy and me session special, I always say the same thing: it’s not about perfect outfits, perfect behavior, or perfect posing. It’s about presence. Connection. The way a child melts into their mother’s arms. The way a mom brushes hair out of her little one’s face. The way laughter bursts out unexpectedly. The way love looks when it’s unfiltered and unforced.
That’s exactly what this session was—an unfiltered glimpse of motherhood in its purest form.
Allie wasn’t trying to impress the camera. She was simply being a mom. And that authenticity is what makes these images so powerful. They’re not just photos—they’re memories preserved. Moments her son will look back on someday and say, “That’s what my mom’s love looked like.”
A Session I’ll Never Forget
I walked away from this session with a full heart and a renewed appreciation for what I get to do as a Simi Valley family photographer. It’s more than taking pictures. It’s witnessing stories. It’s celebrating the beauty inside the ordinary. It’s recognizing God’s fingerprints in the lives of the people I meet.
To Allie: thank you for letting me capture these moments. Thank you for trusting me, for showing up so authentically, and for sharing your joy with me. God’s favor shines so clearly on you, and it was a blessing to witness it through my lens.
If you’re considering a mommy and me session in Simi Valley or anywhere in the Ventura County area, I would be honored to document your story as well. These seasons are fleeting—but the memories don’t have to be.
Let’s create something beautiful together.
